About

Simen Røyseland is a designer currently working as Creative Director at Neue Design Studio.

I'm interested in the different ways design can intersect with culture, identity, philosophy and emerging social currents. A natural focus on visual identities, editorial design and typography, together with developing brand strategy and design concepts.

"Zine inspired by the ancient philosophy of Stoicism"

"Røyseland's graphic design makes philosophy witty and accessible"

Calmeyers Hage

In the 1700s, before Jernbanetorget in Oslo became home to train stations and tobacco factories, Henrik Calmeyer had a dream of establishing a garden here, in what was the heart of bustling Christiania. Calmeyers Hage has taken his dream further and realized its own dream of creating an exclusive bar, with drinks, unique ambiance, and an inviting garden terrace in the center of Oslo.

NRK

The goal of the update to NRK's visual identity was aligned with their strategic objectives of being found, chosen, and living, responding to the evolving media landscape.

The proposed solution, guided by the design concept Distinct, lively, and empathetic, offered a comprehensive redesign across channels, with tools such as a new color program, adaptable typeface and dynamic patterns, while still retaining the iconic 1979 logo.

Steen og Strøm

Steen & Strøm, Oslo's leading department store, needed to revamp its customer experience to align with the evolving streetscape. The debut of the new wing, featuring a prominent entrance on Oslo's bustling main street, Karl Johans gate, necessitated the implementation of a fresh signage system and visual identity, symbolizing the shift from conventional to contemporary.

On Anger

On Anger was written by the Roman statesman, satirist, and philosopher Seneca around AD 45. The work defines and explains anger within the context of Stoic philosophy, offering therapeutic advice on how to prevent anger.

The text is both archaic and timeless. While it is distinctly rooted in ancient Rome, the emotion itself—and the reflections around it— remain as relevant today as they were in Seneca's time.

This project aims to present the text in a contemporary format while retaining visual links to its heritage.

Enchiridion of Stoic Philosophy

A zine called Enchiridion (a small book containing condensed information on a subject) inspired by the ancient Greek philosophy Stoicism.

Stoicism might seem to rest upon some naive—almost banal—ideas, but there is a hidden depth to the school of thought, and this is something which is used as a concept in the design process. The typesetting and layout is simple, almost non-hierarchical. Select sentences are enclosed instead of underlined, so that the zine can either be read as a long form text, or one can quickly leaf through the book if you're only looking for some inspirational quotes.
